Behind Closed Doors

Many people at Wichita State don't realize how heavily Resident Assistants are trained here. We go though 2 weeks of training from 9am-11pm (including weekends) to make sure we are prepared to handle everything from roommate disagreements, to clogged toilets, to critical and emergency situations. We go through over 8 hours of mental health first responder training alone, days of policy testing and emergency procedures, and work closely with many different departments on campus to ensure that our residents are in good hands. The final day in training, new Resident Assistants are tested in a series of simulations called "Behind Closed Doors." Some of the simulations include alcohol and drug abuse, large parties and crowd control, depression, suicide, and rape. New RA's are evaluated and critiqued by their Senior Staff at the end of each scenario. Behind Closed Doors are typically the most dreaded part of training because the simulations are designed for us to fail, because they are intended to be a learning experience. Training for Resident Assistants is much more extensive that most people realize.
